Mr.Alex briefing us on Terrapuri and its history

The first thing I felt when I reached the venue was, peace and calmness. The area of this currently a resort, does not have any surrounding buildings, structures or not even any human movement. It is located in remote area with a front view of endless ocean. The breeze from ocean hits directly to the face while standing at the main entrance of Terrapuri heritage village.

Like Rumah Warisan Haji Su, Terrapuri heritage village is also a project done to conserve the traditional timber houses. However, Tarrepuri heritage village has conserved and given another use for the buildings which is operating as a resort. Hence, this place has become famous among tourists, for its calm and peaceful surrounding. The landscaping, especially the water features around the compound gives a harmonious addition to the serenity.

Mr. Alex, the owner of the Terrapuri gave us a brief history of how he started with tourism and the journey up until he started with Terrapuri. Although he is a Chinese guy, the love and passion he had about the Malay traditional houses made him preserve and convert this house he inherited from his family.

According to Mr.Alex, at the age of 19, he started involving in tourism when he saw an opportunity of converting this grandfather's two story wooden shop lot with beautiful woodcarvings. This shop lot had 9 rooms and is located in the middle of Maran, a beautiful fishing village at Pahang, Malaysia. After his higher studies in the US, he officially started his own guesthouse business in the 100 years old shop lot. He ran this business without any website or a platform to reach out people. He used brochures as advertisement.

In 1998 he launched his own website as a tour agent and in the first year itself he got 500k bookings all over the world. Eventually around in year 4, he got over 10 million online bookings and started opening offices at KL, Penang and Kota Bharu.

In the year 2000, for his passion and interest in architecture and intrapreneur, he got together his team and started the restoration of these 200+ years old houses. His team was very dedicated to this project and has been working together since then. He was advised to choose a more famous site to do this project, however he believed that this kind of architecture belonged to this part of Malaysia, hence he chose the site where the Terrapuri is currently located.

Dining and lounging areas under the main houses

There are 29 antique hundred years old Classic Houses in the village. The stay per night ranges from rm430 to rm1000. The main house which was restored originally was built with 100% cengal wood. However, after restoration, it currently is around 90% cengal wood with 10% of other kind of woods.

I myself was very intrigued and fascinated about the whole surrounding. The main two houses are in the middle of a pond where it overlooks the infinity pool down the site terrain. All the villas are located further away and down from the main houses. This really cancelled out any outside noise and once we are inside, it felt like that there is nothing in this world except that surrounding. All we heard was trees moving, bird chirping and water moving.

A tourist villa

The villas looked normal outside, but inside was so cozy and had a live feeling. One of the main interesting features of the villas was the bamboo bathtub and the bath itself. It had necessary privacy, but it felt as if we were in the open nature. I, right on spot decided to go there again to spend couple of nights and enjoy the scenery away from fast and busy life of city.
