The owner of this house was belong to late Haji Su Mohammed Salleh bin Haji Mohammed, a very influential figure and a wealthy trader who has contributed a lot to the region. He was a wealthy businessman and in his day was a prominent figure in the state. The state museum took over the house and did the conservation project which ended about 2 years ago. Arkitek Anisa was one of the architects worked in this project and she gave us the tour of the building.

The older house out of the two Rumah Bujang Berpeleh Kembar Tiga, was built before WW2 and it was the house where Haji Su and his family initially lived. With the current market value of the Cengal wood (wood used in the construction of this building) the cost of this building will be over rm 5 million. The construction technology was based on the traditional Malay architecture employing a system of structural connection known as 'tanggam and pasak' which wooden jointing system. When we walked through the house, we saw royalty. We saw an old palace because of its elevated distinctive features that are quite unique. The furniture in the house was royal, especially the beds and lights.

Rumah Limas Belanda was a later addition constructed in 1941. This house is a contrast to the Rumah Bujang Berpeleh Kembar Tiga as it featured more European styles like Dutch Hip Roof style, and a ‘baloon-frame’ construction method. Even the interior of the house has more vibrant colors with touch of modern ornaments.

What we see these days about the tradition construction projects is that most of them are just preserving projects. We don't see new buildings coming up like this even as resorts or simple model buildings. I guess it will never be the same again with modern and more easy ways of construction.
