Entrance with some colored woodcarving artworks
Seni Kayu Warisan is a small wood carving factory which employs and encourages youth to involve in this work. The founder of the factory is called Encik Burhan Ashari, 60+ years, who had absolutely no knowledge about wood carving when he started this business. He came from an artistic family which passed the artistic blood to him as well. Encik Burhan Ashari said that he was always interested in architecture, but chose an engineering career with the request of his parents. However, with the artistic mind, he started getting interested into the woodcarving and that's when he started a self-teaching process. His tutors were google, youtube, books and libraries. Also according to him, he used to travel around to learn more about the woodcarving.

Some tools used for woodcarving

They use 100% cengal wood in the woord carvings as it lasts for almost a lifetime, and all the furniture are custom made to the needs of the client. Recently they have started on mass productions. The process of mass productions is slightly different from the customized ones. They use a stencil for the woodcarvings and spray on the timber pieces using the stencil. This is an innovative method to come up with consistent designs without using much of tools and machines.

Cutting out the design by machine

Carving the cut designs manually
Seni Kayu Warisan is known as the first ones to introduce colors in the wood carvings and this was added some twist to the traditional way of carving. Even though Encik Burhan Ashari did not do wood carving himself, he used to color on the art pieces and some of the clients really liked that finishing touch.

Colored artworks

Encik Burhan Ashari started this woodcarving business as a passion and it was not about the income or money. He used to worked on some government projects which included wooden works of an airport. However, after the projects were over, he went jobless. He finished up all the profit and ended up using his savings. But the urge and the passion to the wood carving, he never gave up on it. At this point it crossed my mind that this is something we don't get these days. We have become so materialistic that we forgot of the real value of things. But also something I have always thought, sometimes being lazy is also a beginning of a new innovation. Well, there is no line in between I guess.

It is sometimes good to think out of the box and its not always bad to add new things to traditional methods. Sometimes to keep up with the modern ways, it is in fact good to add a modern touch into the traditional ways so that it fits better into our modern world.

The best thing was that I got to purchase a small art piece from Seni Kayu Warisan and I am keeping it as a souvenir.
